Human Rights Day – Brief on the Mental Health of Refugees

On Human Rights Day we ask the question: Is the Universal Declaration on Human Rights truly universal if it doesn’t guarantee human rights protections for refugees?
A study from 2021 reports that 95% of refugees experienced at least one traumatic event during transit and, on average, they experienced 10 traumatic events. A third of refugees experienced 13 or more different types of traumatic events during transit. These experiences have been documented to have multiple harmful effects of refugees’ mental health.
